Common Questions
Yes, we need your frames in order to ensure that the lenses are produced properly to our high standards. The only way to ensure that the lenses fit, function, and look great is to have the frame during lens fabrication.
The Process
At ReplaceALens, ordering eyeglass lenses online produces top-quality lenses equal to or better than what you'll find in most physical optical shops. How? We guide our customers through the process with streamlined product selection, relevant questioning, and simple instructions, leaving little room for error.
The Measurements
As operators of both an online lens replacement service and a physical storefront, ReplaceALens has first-hand comparison experience of eyeglass lens quality and customer satisfaction. Whether you are ordering online or in our store, we need the same three pieces of information to ensure your glasses are top-quality:
- A valid, accurate prescription.
- The PD, or pupillary distance, which tells us where to place the optical center of the lens horizontally.
- The Vertical OC (pupil/segment height), which tells us where to place the optical center of the lens vertically.
1. A valid, accurate prescription.
2. The PD, or pupillary distance, which tells us where to place the optical center of the lens horizontally.
3. The pupil (or segment) height, which tells us where to place the optical center of the lens vertically.

Frame Alignment
The last factor is in regard to the frame alignment. Whenever new lenses are inserted into a frame, there is a likelihood that the frame will change its adjustment. We take note of the adjustment when the frame arrives to ensure that standard alignment is preserved throughout the process.
The Consensus
After over 1,000,000 pairs served, we can say (and so can our customers) that our process yields the best results. Plus, if you ever need further assistance, our Expertly Qualified Opticians and Customer Service Managers are here to help until you are satisfied.
The PD, or pupillary distance is the distance between your pupils in millimeters. Your PD is necessary to accurately fit your lenses to your frame so that you can see clearly.

After we receive your glasses, processing takes an average of 7-10 business days (M-F). Your order will then be shipped back to you via the selected shipping method.
We do our best to complete every order as quickly as possible. We ensure the lenses are technically and cosmetically perfect prior to shipping.
Drilled rimless, high-wrap frames, and mirror coatings may take additional processing time to complete.
For Rx orders, we need your PD and Vertical Pupil Placement (Optical Center/Segment Height).
The easiest ways to obtain this are either a picture of you wearing the glasses, or if you are sending in a pair of glasses that had a lens that worked well for you at one time, and you are ordering the same lens type, we can copy the lens measurements off the current lenses.
In order to produce the highest quality lenses, we require an accurate prescription. You can obtain your prescription in the following ways:
1. Get a new eye exam and send ReplaceALens the resulting prescription. (There is an upload option during the ordering process or you can email it to us. Contact information.
2. Use your current, valid prescription (must be up-to-date and not expired).
3. We can duplicate the current prescription in your lenses (The lenses must be the same 'Lens Type' that you will be ordering. I.E. single vision, progressive, etc). ***We cannot copy the Rx from Digital HD Lenses.
4. We can copy the prescription off another pair of glasses that you send as long as they are the same 'Lens Type' you're ordering. ***We cannot copy the Rx from Digital HD Lenses.
You will be able to select your Rx Delivery Method during the checkout process.
Purchasing multiple pairs of lenses is quick and easy. Plus, you save $10 off your 2nd pair & $5 off each additional pair on ORDERS OVER $100, applied automatically at checkout! (For the discount to apply the pairs must be sent in at the same time).
1. Select your lenses and add your first pair to your cart
2. On the 'my cart' page, click the 'ADD ANOTHER PAIR AND SAVE' link
3. Add your second pair of lenses to your cart
4. Repeat for each additional pair
5. Checkout

2. We avoid the high overhead of traditional eyeglass retail locations.
3. We perform hundreds of lens replacements a week, which allows us to buy products in bulk and pass the savings on to you.

Selecting your lens type
Your lens type selection depends on what you're going to be using the glasses for. If you are simply using the lenses to see one focal length, then you will choose single vision. If you need to see more than one focal length (i.e. near and far), then a multi-focal lens must be used. Choose between the various types of single vision and multifocal lens packages, depending on what the lenses will be used for.
Selecting your lens material
We do recommend using the lens selector as we will select the perfect lens material for your application. The stronger your prescription, the thicker and heavier your lenses will be. If you know what lens material you want, you can select it by browsing here.
Polarized & tinted lenses both reduce the amount of light entering the lens, but polarized lenses restrict light entering the lens from specific directions. This prevents irritating reflections and glare, ultimately providing the clearest sunglass vision available. A Tinted lens is dyed to a certain color and density, but does not resctrict light entering the front of the lens as a polarized lens will. Couple with a Sunglass Anti-Glare Coating for the ultimate sunglass lens.
The Digital (High-Definition), also known as 'free-form,' progressive lens technology has taken progressive lenses to a new level. While traditional progressives are produced using 'pre-molded' designs, where the same design is used for every application, the new, Digital (HD) progressives are fully customized! In essence, your specific applications (Rx, frame type, lens material, use, etc) are taken into account to produce a lens with wider fields of view and smoother vision. Does that mean the traditional lenses are low-quality? No, but for those who want the widest fields of view and the peak of new technology, the new Digital (HD) technology is an improvement.
'No-line bifocals,' 'no-line trifocals,' & 'progressives' are all the same type of lens, referred to within the industry as 'Progressive Lenses.' So why so many names for the same thing? Many retailers have used the 'no-line' term to help explain how the progressive lenses look and function, as well as to create distinct branding in order to gain a competitive advantage. Regardless of which name you order them under, they are all Progressive Lenses!
